The

The Natural Park and its Islands

Isola Maggiore.

Located on the lake near the shore of Tuoro sul Trasimeno it is the only island with a fulltime population in a village that still retains its 15th century fishing village architecture. In 1213, Saint Francis of Assisi went there on retreat for the Lent fast, and one can still visit the chapel that marks the place where he stepped off the boat after having crossed the water during a storm and kneeled down in thankful prayer. The tradition of Irish
lace-making on the island is one of its points of pride and is still practiced by many women as they sit on their doorsteps and watch their quiet world stroll by.

Isola Minore.

This is the smallest of the three islands, and not much is known about it. Privately owned, it is not inhabited. It falls under the jurisdiction of Passignano sul Trasimeno.

Isola Polvese.

This Island falls under the jurisdiction of Castiglione del Lago and is the largest of the three islands. It has many interesting historical landmarks that include: the Chiesa di San Secondo, the Monastero Olivetano, Chiesa di San Giuliano, a castle dating to the 14th century and recently restored, the Porcinai pool and an aquatic
plants garden. The island has proud history of environmental protection and houses an educational structure in which school children learn about nature and its importance. Various meeting halls and centres are open for group activities and there is a youth hostel to accommodate groups.

Castiglione

Castiglione del Lago

Fortified on a small promontary on the west side of Lake Trasimeno, surrounded by the city wall dating XIII cent., rises the town with its powerful, triangular, 30m. high mast.

One of the greatest artistic treasures of Castiglione del Lago is the Palazzo Della Corgna built around 1560 on the first tower-house of the Baglioni family (XIII cent.), later extended. It has one of the best examples of manneristic paintings to be found in the region. The Rocca del Leone is one of the most outstanding military structures of medieval Umbria. lt is an irregular pentagon with five towers and three doors built in 1247 on a calcareous abutment that overlooks Trasimeno.

With regards to important dates, Coloriamo i cieli on May 1st is an international event for kite flyer of all ages.

From the Islands to the Oasis

From the Islands to the Oasis

Oasi Naturalistica La Valle
The “La Valle” oasis is the most interesting area, from the standpoint of nature, of the Lake. It includes marshland and vast expanses of cane thickets that make a perfect habitat for the migratory birds that rest here by the tens of thousands on their flights from place to place. The oasis is open all year round for visitors to wander in and also offers guided tours on the wooden walkway that leads to an observatory. A station for ringing birds with identification bands is also located here.

Bike

Bike in Umbria

Cycling through the woods, in close contact with nature and far from noise and traffic. Pushing up a steep mule track to the highest of peaks for a beautiful view, tackling a tough single track through the forest or just idling from one village to the next along dirt roads through olive groves and vineyards.

Pietro

Pietro Perugino e the Trasimeno Landscape

Born in 1450 in Città della Pieve, Pietro Vannucci studied between Arezzo and Florence, that is, in the atelier that gave
us Piero della Francesca and the workshop of Verrocchio.
Vannucci became more appropriately known as “il Perugino”, a nickname given him by his Florentine colleagues when in
1501 he set up shop in Perugia. It is important to note that when Vannucci went to Arezzo and Florence, he often travelled
over the roads around Castel della Pieve and Cortona, over the softly rolling hills that give onto the Trasimeno Lake and
the Valdichiana. It was this landscape that inspired the great scenery depicted in so many of his paintings. In order to
fully appreciate it, one should travel over the still somewhat secret roads that from Città della Pieve lead Paciano, Panicale
and Castiglione del Lago and that influenced the works of the maestro and his school.

Città della Pieve
The Adoration of the Magi (1504) - (Oratorio di Santa Maria dei Bianchi).
The story is presented as a great procession of horsemen that disappears into the distant and vast andscape conceived by Il Perugino. One can recognise, even though it is stylised, the view that Città della Pieve has of the Trasimeno Lake.

Panicale
The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian (1505) - (Chiesa di San Sebastiano)
This painting represents the scene of the Martyrdom over traces of blood and underscores the ecstasy of the Saint as
he receives the arrows and looks peacefully heavenwards towards God. It is almost a theatrical scene, a sort of dance
around the naked body of Sebastian, while the background features the softly rolling hills that Il Perugino painted with
such majesty.

The

The Perfect Blending of Man and Nature

The environment is a fundamental characteristic of the Trasimeno area.

The area is safeguarded, from an
environmental point of view, by initiatives that involve the tourist accommodations and the city administrations of the shore’s towns. The Agenda 21 Locale is one of the more important of these initiatives and regulates sustainable
growth in the strictest of ways. In fact, the Trasimeno Lake Park, the largest of the six Regional Parks of Umbria, is one of the most important wetlands areas in Europe for the presence of plant species, fauna and fish
of great importance. The total silence and the nature that it encompasses allows life to go on here without having to turn to artificial methods of preservation. It is truly unique.
Since 2006, Trasimeno Lake has been associated with Living Lakes, a network of 52 lakes all over the world which has been recognised by the UN for its efforts in the field of the sustainable growth of important lakes, wetlands and other sweet-water bodies. As a recognition of the efforts towards adhering to the standards that guarantee quality management and services that respect the environment, a seal of quality has been created called the “Manifesto Ambientale”.

Recognition by Goletta Verde
The twenty-fifth edition of Goletta Verde, the Environmental League’s campaign aimed at monitoring and spreading information regarding the health of the Italian coastlines, rivers and lakes, has established that the Trasimeno Lake has absolutely no “critical areas”, nor areas with “significant pollution”.

An efficient monitoring system to safeguard the quality of the environment
The quality of the environment is under the constant and vigilant eye of the ARPA (the Regional Authority for
Environmental Protection), who takes samples and analyses the various parameters of air, water and earth to make sure they conform to both national and European norms. The results of this data is fundamental in the establishment of policies aimed at the improvement of the environment of the lake area.
